Welcome to the 2022 National Patent Application Drafting Competition!

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) invites your school to participate in the 2022 National Patent Application Drafting Competition. The competition introduces law students to issues arising in U.S. patent law and develops their patent application drafting skills.

Competition Process

The Competition comprises Regional Rounds on March 5, 2022, and the National Finals on April 8, 2022.  The Regional Rounds will be virtual and include up to a total of 75 teams divided among five regions. The winner from each region will be invited to compete in the National Finals before a panel of senior USPTO officials and other esteemed judges.

Based on a hypothetical invention statement, student teams will search the prior art and prepare a patent application along with other associated materials.  Additionally, teams will present and defend their application and drafting strategy before a panel of judges comprised of patent practitioners, USPTO personnel and other members of the IP community.

See the 2022 Competition Rules for additional information.
